Racers Den: Eating in a Garage

Share

In Part-1 of the Racers Den Holiday Special, we talked about our tradition of visiting the York Toy Extravaganza. However, there is a second part of this journey. Whenever we are in the vicinity of the York Fairgrounds, be it for this show, VAGfair, or any number of other car-adjacent events held there, we head over to our favorite lunch spot: Quaker Steak & Lube (QSL).

Yes, it’s a chain… Yes, it’s on par with BW’s and Green Turtle… but that doesn’t matter, because where else can you dine while sitting under classic Corvettes and Motorcycles?

The outside of every QSL is adorned with modernized classic petroliana like these gas pumps.
Not your ordinary door handle. We love that they embrace the #thegaragelifestyle and really ham it up.
While you wait… have a seat on this Chevy Squarebody (above) or Dodge (below) pick-up bench made by Barry’s Benches.

Over the bar hangs several classic Harley-Davidson Motorcycles for you to inspect while your beer is coming off the taps.
The room is purposefully dimly lit with powerful spot lighting used to draw attention to the unaltered C3 Corvette mounted at nearly 90-degrees from the ceiling.

As is expected from a themed restaurant like QSL, the bathrooms are covered in ’50/’60s Classic & Hot Rod memorabilia.

As Mike & Frank from History Channel’s “American Pickers” would say, this place is also packed with: Petroliana. A term used to summarize: “vintage service station decor.” QSL is kitchy and cute, and most importantly checks all the right boxes for a family trip. It’s an affordable, predictable meal. No one goes away hungry or unsatisfied.

Having taken various members of GTM, unsuspecting friends, and dragging my kids along with me many times to this event over the years, we can all agree it’s a bit chaotic, but in the end, it’s always rewarding … and who knows, you might also run into GTM members on your visit. #smallworld. Until next year… #keepcollecting #treasurehunting #happyholidays

Each year we’re in town for Thanksgiving, we make it a point to return to the Toy Extravaganza to do some Holiday shopping and have lunch at Quaker Steak & Lube, what are some of your vehicle-inspired Holiday Traditions?  – COMMENT BELOW – We’d love to learn about them!

Merry Motoring…
