Our friends at Hooked On Driving (HOD) recently brought to our attention the following message, which sent many of us on an emotional rollercoaster …
“[HOD] have just received some unfortunate news regarding Pitt Race International that we want to pass along to you all. We have been informed that we are scheduled to be the last club to hold an event there under current owners. It looks like the track has been sold to developers and there are no plans to hold events there next year, you can read into this as you wish. Word is already starting to spread and we wanted to get it out to our team ASAP. FYI – If you haven’t instructed with us under the new ownership you might have to get vetted again for this event.”
Word on the street, via SCCA, is “The Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace) is set to close after November 30, 2025. The facility has been sold to a developer, and all scheduled events for the remainder of the year are expected to proceed as planned. PittRace has been a significant venue for racing since its opening in the early 2000s, and it will honor its remaining dates before closing.”
And with that in mind, the bigger question becomes, “What will become of races like the PVGP?” hosted annually at PittRace (as seen below). Will it be forced to move to the next closest venue?, Mid-Ohio, about 90 minutes away. Or will the PVGP become collateral damage as part of the fate of PittRace? No official statements have been made about the event yet for the 2026 season.
Many of us at GTM have fond memories turning laps (and coaching) at PittRace. Despite it’s original track layout, the expanded version – clocking in at nearly 3 miles of natural terrain – rivaled laps at places like VIR, Watkins Glen and even Road Atlanta for “Most Fun” by many of our drivers. Check out the video collection below of some of our favorite moments from the track.

It’s a shame to see any Motorsports facility close, especially one that was continuing to expand and modernize like PittRace, who’d just installed an all new Pro-Shop and other facilities back in 2024. But the trend of selling off drag strips, dirt tracks and even road courses to developers has been ongoing for some time as land prices continue to soar. Which is an unfortunate reality, and PittRace isn’t the last of the venues that could be shutting down; but there is hope… facilities like Flatrock Motorclub and others are continuing to be built up as you read this.
Stay tuned to our calendar for events for other track days cropping up all over the region.
