Summit Point Legend – Passes Away at 85

Always a smiling face and a light blue S10 pickup with a rod knock, Donny was a legend.

Donny Owens, 85, of Summit Point, WV, passed away Sunday, December. 24, 2023, at the Berkeley Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV. He was born July 10, 1938, in Washington, D.C. He was raised in Kabletown. His family moved to Summit Point in 1962. Donny worked at the Summit Point Speedway for 55 years since 1968, most of that time at the admission gate, where in 2021, the front gate was named after him to commemorate what has turned into 53 years of service.

Donny was a valued member of our team, and community, known for his dedication to Summit Point and the motorsports community.  He will be greatly missed by us all.

Services for Donny are:

Thursday, December 28th

Family and friends will be received from 6 – 8 pm at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home – 310 South Fairfax Blvd, Ranson, WV.

Friday, December 29th

Services will be held at 11 AM on Friday the 29th at the Apple Chapel located in the Summit Circuit Paddock on-site at Summit Point Motorsports Park. Rev. Donald McCallister will be officiating the services.

Directions: Enter through the Motorsports Gate, make a left and follow the red line, make a right over the bridge, and enter the Summit Paddock

A procession will follow immediately to the burial site located at Edge Hill Cemetery with Military honors – 604 Hunter Street, Charles Town, WV.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Jefferson County Council on Aging – 103 West 5th Avenue, Ranson, WV 25438
